A screenplay, like J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts, can read like a novel. After the first few pages of getting used to the format, the reader becomes engrossed in the story as with any other book. Tinselfish, by John Evan Garvey, is a heartwarming fish-out-of-water-in-West-Hollywood story. While busy skewering Hollywood ("Are they still using manual typewriters" "Only the most respected are"), the story follows the main character on an impossible journey from his deep Amish roots in Pennsylvania (you've seen Breaking Amish: LA) to rooming with shemale call-girls who are dead-ringers for Hayworth and Bacall (you've seen LA Confidential). He works at hackysacking digital-animation studios where nobody does any work, and he becomes emotionally involved with a Bogart-quoting PI who has a problem with intermittent rage disorder. He's not just a fish-out-of-water, he's a fish-out-in-space. The strong dialogue is frequently funny and/or dripping with irony, and the characters are real and sympathetic. Would you like to be someone who has to leave everything he's ever known in order to live an honest life Like Duran Duran: "But I won't cry for yesterday, there's an ordinary world somehow I have to find. And as I try to make my way to the ordinary world, I will learn to survive." Heartwarming, funny, occasionally outrageous, always genuine.______ After three decades of unwavering Amish faith, Zephaniah Stoltzfus unwillingly contemplates setting aside his belief in God and living an honest life as an openly gay man outside the Amish community. On his own in Philadelphia, he attempts to decipher the cryptic protocols of the outside world, and his nascent career in computer graphics pulls him abruptly "through the looking glass" to Los Angeles. Zeph soon finds himself the sidekick of a Bogart-quoting P.I. and drawn into investigations involving murder, rape, blackmail, hacking, grand larceny, illegal gambling, prostitution, drug dealing and aggravated assault. Not quite the peaceful rural life Zeph envisioned sharing with a lover on coming out. But life doesn't always follow the script.
